Finding the Time to Get Everything Done
You will gain more time to get everything done with The Contractor’s Profit System.
Your estimating is organized so you are not taking more time just to find the items you need for the estimate
You have your own specific database of material and labor costs, so you are not using some random data, so you are not searching to find the cost data you need
You can use templates for the types of work you do regularly like kitchen remodeling
One of our clients created a $150,000 detailed estimate in under an hour and got the job because of a template he created
Because your estimates are organized you are not wasting time looking for duplicate or missing items in the estimate
Simplified budgets make it easy to track your costs when you are paying your bills and your people which you already have to do
Organizing Your Estimating
Your estimates are more accurate when your estimating is organized
Finding duplicate items in your estimates are easier because you can review 1 section at a time
You will estimate faster when your estimating is organized. Everything is done by section.
That means you are focused on 1 section at a time and not trying to work on 5 things at a time
Your estimates look more professional to your clients when they are organized
Clients appreciate professional looking estimates because they see exactly what they are going to get for the price they are paying
You will find that when you present organized, professional looking, estimates you will win jobs over lower estimates that are not professional
Compare your budget by section to what the expected percentage of the project to confirm accuracy and find problems

Because your estimates are accurate, and detailed, you will get the profit percentage you want from the project
Detailed estimates eliminate any disputes over what is included in the job. You get change orders instead
Confirming material prices before you submit the bid means your costs are going to be what you expect… no surprises 🙂
When you estimate with measurable items you can measure the accuracy of each item in your estimate. If you find a problem, you can adjust your costs for next time
Tracking your costs as you pay your suppliers, subs and your crew keeps you on top of your costs so you can take corrective action before it becomes a budget buster
Making Your Clients Happy
Your clients may want to look at several options for the project you are proposing
When you use the Copy Estimate feature of The Contractor’s Profit System with LiteningFast Estimating you can create as many different options for your client as you need
Copy Estimate makes a duplicate of the current estimate so you can delete some items, add some items, modify some items, change any information you need to make your client happy and get the job
Detail estimates make your clients happy because they see exactly what they are getting and exactly how much it is going to cost
Detail Estimates make YOU happy because you get change orders rather than disputes over what is included in the estimate
As you are doing your takeoff, you can add notes that can remind you of what you were thinking at that time
As you are doing your takeoff, you can add notes about the quality of the products or special features that are included
You have the option to print the notes, or not, on the estimate you present to your client
Accurate Estimates – Getting it Right Every Time
When you estimate with what I call “measurable items” means that your estimates will be accurate over time
Accurate, profitable, estimates require measuring the accuracy of your estimate against the original estimate
Accurate estimates require that you adjust your pricing when you discover a variance in what you expected to spend, so you get it right on the next estimate
Compare your budget by section to what the expected percentage of the entire project in that section to confirm accuracy and find problems
For example, let’s say the Framing section is normally 30% of your projects.
When you run the budget report you discover the cost for Framing is 40% of the project.
It may be an issue OR it may be ok for this project. You at least know about it so you can take action, if necessary
Making a Fair Profit – Part II
If you do not know what something is going to cost… you can’t estimate it.
You must have a good handle on your costs
You can easily track your costs as you pay your suppliers, subs and crew
Costs are tracked against the simplified budgets that are created by The Contractor’s Profit System with LiteningFast Estimating
A few minutes each week reviewing cost against budget will help you identify any issues early so you can take action
And you will keep any problems from growing into giant budget busting challenges
Estimating by Sections
You can estimate faster when you estimate using sections
You are only working with 1 section at a time, like foundations, framing or roofing
Missing or duplicated items are easier to find when you are using sections
Your estimates are more accurate when you are using sections because you can verify the budget for each section matches the normal percentage
Your clients will find your estimate easier to understand when you use sections… AND you are more likely to win the bid!
You can set up a percentage in each of your sections to verify the accuracy of your estimate before you present it to your client
For example, let’s say Site Prep is normally 5% of the budget for your projects. When you create an estimate, you can confirm that the Site Prep is approximately 5%. If it is NOT you can check for an error
If you have projects, like bath or kitchen remodels, that you do regularly you can create templates for those projects
You can create a new estimate in minutes from a template
Templates are going to be more accurate than piece at a time estimates because all of the pieces are already there
All you have to do is delete items that are not used for this new estimate, change a couple of quantities and BAM! you are done
The system shows you items you have not updated so you can be confident that you have a great estimate
One of our clients prepared a $150,000 estimate in an hour and a half and won the job with his detailed estimate
By the way, his clients loved the detailed estimate because they could see exactly what they were getting for the price they were paying
When you use measurable items, you guarantee the long-term success of your business
As you pay your bills and your people you may find a section that does not meet your budget. If you determine that it is not a glitch you adjust the item in your database so the next time it is more accurate
If you cannot measure it, you can’t estimate it. You will continue to make the same budget busting estimating errors time after time
You cannot make money job after job if you do not use measurable items… and you want to make money job after job, don’t you?
Your clients love detailed estimates because they see exactly what they are going to get for the money they are spending
In today’s world everyone talks about transparency. Detail estimates are the ultimate transparency. Everything is on the table, you are totally transparent
Detailed estimates win more jobs
You get change orders rather than disputes over what was included in the estimate because if it is not in the estimate, it is not included in the project
Sometimes you want to give your clients options. Options in terms of materials you will use, the quality of the materials, how many windows, how big, etc.
Copy estimate allows you to easily prepare multiple estimates with different options in minutes
Your client will feel like they are in control of the project helping you get the job and that is what you want, isn’t it?
You can produce a list of materials for your project that you can send to your material suppliers to get current pricing of the materials
When you get the pricing back from your suppliers you update the estimate with the current prices which also updates your database to keep the material pricing current
Accurate prices are what you want, right?
Assemblies help you estimate faster. When you have an assembly, you automatically take off all the items in that assembly with one entry. This saves you time because 1 entry does the work of 5 or 10 or more entries
You estimates are more accurate when you use assemblies because you are getting multiple items with one entry, so nothing is forgotten or missing from the estimate, And you are not entering quantities multiple times with the possibility of typographic errors
There are 2 levels of assemblies that are included based on the level of the system you sign up for
Simple assemblies allow you to add quantities of the products that are required for the assembly
Complex assemblies allow you to use formulas, like you would in a spreadsheet, to calculate the quantities of the materials required for the assembly
You estimate faster and more accurately when you use assemblies and speed and accuracy are what you want, aren’t they?
